The Cost of Healthcare in 2010

After the loss of my job February 2009, it also meant the loss of our insurance coverage (once the COBRA was gone). We are now just another family without any health insurance. Below is a running tally of what medical expenses we as “average” family face in 2010. Current YTD? $14,910

January 2010 – $493

  • $210 – 60 day supply of ADHD medication
  • $140 – Well-baby check-up (18 months)
  • $55 – Antibiotics – ear infection
  • $50 – Follow-up office visit – ear infection (discounted from $61 for paying in full)
  • $33 – Antibiotics – 6 week course

Februay 2010 – $220

  • $220 – Routine dental for Doodicus and Yo-yo Mama ($230 – 5% discount for cash PIF)

March 2010 – $207

  • $207 – 60 day supply of ADHD medication

April 2010 – $91

  • $80 – Office Visit at Urgent Care
  • $11 – Prescription Eye Drops (50% discount via United Way’s promotional for un-, under-insured)

May 2010 – $270

  • $130 – 60 day supply of ADHD medication ($80 discount from drug manufacturer)
  • $60 – Eye exam
  • $80 – Dental exam

July 2010 – $140

  • $140 – Two year check up for Aitch
  • $130 – 60 day supply of ADHD medication ($80 discount from drug manufacturer)

August 2010 – $399

  • $230 – Routine dental exams for Doodicus and myself
  • $169 – Routine dental exam for Sparring Partner

September 2010 – $358

  • $125 – Office visit, dermatology
  • $130 – 60 day supply of ADHD medication
  • $103 – Office visit, Doodicus

October 2010 – $12,732

  • $252 – Pre-admission testing, 20% cash discount from $315
  • $246 – Pre-admission testing, radiology
  • $8,440 – Wide excision of Malignant Melanoma, $2,810 cash discount from $11, 250
  • $3,737 – Professional fees (surgeon, anesthesiologist, pathologist), $1,245 discount from $4,983
  • $57 – Radiologist

    Came back to this to take a look. Depressing/ridiculous.

    We figured out after doing our taxes that even *with* good insurance coverage, we still paid $8000 out of pocket in deductibles/prescriptions/non-covered costs last year. Now granted, we had a high-risk pregnancy and a premature baby during that time period, but those were supposed to be entirely covered by insurance. I don’t think people in countries with socialized medical care understand just how good they’ve got it.
